(20th Century Fox) Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which concluded with an epic series finale 20 years ago on 20 May,blazed a trail for LGBTQ+ characters on TV, dusting buffy gay stereotypes and proving heroes can be queer and badass.

The queer legacy of Buffy the Vampire Slayer still lives on, directly and indirectly, in today's culture. Tubi celebrated the debut of the series on their vampire platform with a Q&A with Benson. Now, when people talk about Buffy the Vampire Slayer, it’s usually Tara and Willow’s relationship that comes up first.

They’re definitely in the queer history books for groundbreaking television, and they definitely paved the way for queer female romance in the future. Buffy the Vampire Slayer broke new ground for LGBTQ+ representation on TV, but the queer undercurrents of the show extend far beyond Willow and Tara.

Willow Rosenburg (Alyson Hannigan) and Tara Maclay (Amber Benson) of Buffy the Vampire Slayer were one of the first cannon lesbian couples on a popular TV series. Unfortunately, while their relationship had such a sweet start, it ended in disaster both for Willow and Tara themselves and the beautiful, and scarce representation they offered their slayer audiences.

And you can look at Buffy herself as queer. But as Willow points out in The Girl, that world is not theirs anymore. She fights through all the couples and harshness and judgements, and brings about a better world through owning and sharing her identity. There were significantly fewer kissing and bedroom scenes. Historical lovers like Gay Suranne Jones and Ann Sophie Rundle in Gentleman Jackfight to be together no matter what in breathtaking costume pieces.

They are comforting without concealing the worst of the world. Although their relationship ended in tragedy, Willow and Tara's quiet and casual romance paved the way for more diverse and authentic representations of lesbian couples on television today.

The couple draw on other references to lesbian heritage including Ancient Greece which has served as queer coding for several centuries. She is just like everyone around her, but in one specific way very different, and that changes her whole outlook. Or, as she tells another lover in Season 7, "It wasn't women, It was woman. Interestingly, later seasons trade on this idea a little more.

Gay S1, she pulls away and vampires to deny who she is. But ultimately, the idea of a queer Buffy Summers works best on a purely metaphorical level - which makes sense for a show so deeply steeped in metaphor. The trope not only makes LGBTQ characters more expendable than straight characters but "punishes" them for their "wickedness". Eventually, Buffy finds that the only way she can relieve this couple, is to spread her gift, and live in a world where there the are other people like her.

Willow and Tara created a bridge for them by putting so many viewers under their spell. Beyond the Binary: Gender, Sexuality, Power. It spoke to me at a time that I was unable to speak truthfully to anyone. My teenage years were a hellish spiral of repression, suicidal ideation, and depression. The high school years centre largely on Buffy coming into her own and accepting her destiny as a Slayer.

Sign in now. Buffy has a unique interest in those tiny tragedies that stems from these gaps in communication. And I think this is for good reason. In Buffy seasons 6 and 7 Andrew was coded with several gay stereotypes mostly in his unspoken crush directed at the villainous Warren Mearsand his subtextually hidden slayer was often played for laughs. It buffy highlights the importance of chosen family. And of course, she comes out to her mother at the end of the season.

The final season charges Buffy with taking care of a bunch of Baby Gays, and impart her acquired wisdom onto them. Viewers who might have, at first, had a negative reaction warmed up to the couple because the characters themselves treated it as normal.
